August 2014 – Finding it Confusing?
First it was three-a-day, then five and now its 7-a-day. Or more accurately 7 – 10-a-day. What am I talking about? Its government guidelines to the number of servings of fruit and vegetables you need to eat daily – and that’s just in the UK. The Japanese government is even recommends 17-a-day!
Why is there such a discrepancy? And why does the number seem to be creeping up wherever you are? Its very simple. Most of us are not getting enough of the vital nutrients need to keep us well. Nutritionists know this, government experts know this – but can you imagine the response to being told to eat 17 servings of fruit and vegetables a day in a country where research clearly shows most people struggle to manage 3, let alone 5, let alone 7! Its too big an ask for people who consider these vital foods to be an optional extra to the bread and pizza.
The UK government set what they saw as an achievable target even though it is clearly inadequate, and has had to be revised upwards, but the compliance with this target is poor.
Ready meals, eating on the run, fast food and just sheer laziness are some of the reasons why many people fail to eat much in the way of fruit and vegetables. The perception is they take time to prepare (seconds usually!), they’re boring, even that the taste is unpleasant. In truth proper vegetarian cookery is delicious with its use of subtle herbs and spices and rarely takes longer to make than a ready meal does to re-heat.
So why are they important in our diet? It all comes down to nutrients – the fuel that runs the metabolic processes of the body. If your body gets a wide range of these daily it can keep every body system working well and in balance. Problems begin to come in when levels start to fall below optimal. Little by little your body has to start to choose how it is going to use its limited resources and health issues gradually start to emerge. Nutritional deficiency sets the scene for metabolic diseases to emerge. These are diseases which occur due to a lack of vital vitamins, minerals, enzymes, aminos and co-factors and encompass all of those illnesses which are rising alarmingly in most countries – diabetes, heart disease, cancer, dementia, Parkinsons, arthritis, auto-immune disorders and so on. Many will kill you, and the rest will make your life a misery.
So what can you do? Why supplement of course! This becomes your safety net to ensure your body has all it needs. But there are good and bad supplements – it really is a minefield!
But don’t worry, things have just become much simpler with the launch of NewGen Superfoods Plus. 34 different wholefoods, nuts and seeds are crammed into each sachet along with other goodies that ensures that your body will daily get the vital nutrients it needs to keep you energised and healthy – or help you get back to this!
